The boy tribute is.... Peeta Mallark!
Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12, the last of the 12 districts surrounding the wealthy Capitol. The people of District 12 are in charge of creating the coal for the Capitol. Most are poor and unhealthy.
No! I will take her place.
And the girl is... Prim Everdeen!
Katniss' father had taught her how to hunt in the forbidden meadow behind District 12 before he died, and this is how she provides food and money for her sister, Prim and her mother.
Every year, there is a reaping for children ages 12-18, and two children will be chosen from each district to compete in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death, televised for the Capitols entertainment.
Peeta is chosen as the boy tribute, who once saved Katniss when she was starving. In unfortunate circumstances, her 12 year old sister is drawn to be the girl tribute and knowing she would never survive, Katniss volunteers as tribute.
Katniss and Peeta are taken to the wealthy and glamorous Capitol, where everyone dresses spontaneously. They are given two weeks of training and prep before they are set to enter the arena.
Katniss, Peeta and the other 22 tributes are lifted into the arena, which turns out to be like a forest.
