The North had an industrial based economy and therefore made money off of manufacturing goods such as fabric and textiles, lumber and iron goods. there were not many large farms due to urbanization so many families stuck to subsistence farming.
immigrants from around the world came to cities in search of jobs in clothing and textile factories. women also had the opportunity to keep wages and provide for their families.
Eventhough slavery was abolished in the North, African Americans were still treated very poorly. They were often not accepted for high paying jobs and were subject to racism.
You shall not talk to me in that manner!
The north had a slave labor based economy and made money by exporting their cotton to the north and Europe.
Slaves were treated very poorly and were often killed or disfigured for very minor crimes such as being accused of talking back or raising their voice.
this slave is to be hanged for his crimes of insolence and trying to steal a loaf of bread.
Slaves became free from slavery if they bought their own freedom, were voluntarily let go by their master, the slaves of interracial parents were often let free and were also freed through their master's will. Although they were free they did not have the same rights as white people, they were not allowed to read and write, possess fire arms, and were not allowed to defend themselves in court, this means that if a slave catcher accused them of being a slave they could not prove they are free
No I am a free man!
