Scene flashes backward in time to where young Ptolemy is swayed by his advisers to plot Pompey's death, in hopes to please Julius Caesar, after Pompey asked to receive refuge in Alexandria.
Meanwhile, on Pompey's ship to Alexandria, where he believes he will be safe, he and his wife Cornelia express concern for the situation.
“He that once enters at a tyrant’s door, becomes a slave, though he were free before”
Upon arriving in Alexandria and boarding Ptolemy's ship, Pompey is greeted by former subordinate Septimus, but is somewhat unsettled by their interactions.
Before reaching Alexandria, Pompey is assassinated under the order of Ptolemy and his advisers.
