Storyboard Text

  • They serfs created settlements in new lands to gain more freedom. They still worked on land but considered it their own. 
  • The expansion of trade and food supply encouraged growth of towns. Towns usually arose at places where merchants could naturally gather. Many new towns were on the land of a feudal lord.
  • Guilds are organizations formed by crafts workers and merchants for trading. You must start out as an apprentice and then you become a journeyman. Competition is discourage in the guilds.
  • Norman tribes took over what is known today as England. They had a new ruler, Alfred the Great. He made a school in the castle. They developed latin into their culture. They recorded all the events that occurred. 
  • Henry I established a common legal system for all of England. He sent royal judges to try court cases. Common law helped to provide a fairer system of justice was was the foundation of English law. A grand jury and trial jury were later developed.
  • The power of the English monarch grew during the Magna Carta. An absolute monarchy was created at this time. England began to rule much of French territory. France became a unified state.
