There has been complaints about aggressive elephant destroying peoples houses and injuring innocent people. This caused the natives to panic and the narrator has been called over to handle the problem.
The narrator did not want to look like a fool in front of the Burmese people. Despite the elephant's behavior being moderated the narrator had to shoot the elephant . The influence of the Burmese people drove the narrator into making his final decision.
