I didn't want to shoot the elephant,but I couldn't look like a fool in front of the Burmese people
The narrator is moments away from shooting the elephant. He begins to plot where he will shoot the elephant so it would not suffer for a very long time. All the faces and expectations push him to finally shoot.
The narrator continues to shoot the elephant when he realizes that the elephant did not die instantly. The narrator did not want to see the animal suffer so he walks away hoping to forget whathas happened.
The elephant eventually dies and th elephant keeper is infuriated. The narrator didn't want to kill the elephant because he does not randomly kill large animals especially if they are worth a lot of money. His reputation was on the line and the least he could do was not look like fool.
