In 1826 a flood destroyed Hudson's Bay's Company's headquarters in Winnipeg. They rebuilt HBC on bigger grounds. It was 30 km down Red River from For Garry Winnipeg.
They rebuilt HBC in the 1830's. It was built with limestone so it was built to last. It was built to last because it was HBC's info centre for Rupert's Land. It was only a info centre for a few years.
The North West Mounted Police trained their first officers at Lower Fort Garry in 1873.

In 1885 it was the first provincial penitentiary and insane asylum.
In 1951 Hudson Bay Company gave Lower Fort Garry to the federal government.
