  • Seceding is against the United Stateś constitution. You are betraying the country
  • The Missouri compromise, Dred Scott case, and the James Brown shooting all contributed to the intensified dispute over slavery. They all increased tension between the Northern and Southern states in the US. This dispute was a leading cause of the war because the south wanted slavery to support their economic needs and North wanted to abolish it since they had no use for it and it was wrong.
  • Georgiaś Role
  • All in favor of seceding
  • Some main groups of people that were at heart during this period were slaves and plantation owners. Slaves longed for freedom and an system called the underground railroad helped them get it. The underground railroad was a process of slaves from the south escaping to the free northern states. However, because of the compromise of 1850 slaves had to escape to Canada.
  • Compromises

  • The South believed that they had the right to nullify laws that were unjust and were thought to be unconstitutional. The South were supporters of sectionalism and were willing to secede if it meant they could abide by their own laws. However, the North believed that the South was being unreasonable and that seceding was against the constitution.
  • Georgiaś Involvment
  • Georgia approves the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act.
  • Many Georgians did not want to secede because a majority of people that lived in Georgia were small farmers and non-slave owners. However, the General Assembly voted 208 to 89 in favor of seceding the United States.
  • I
  • There were a few compromises made to decrease the tension between the Northern and Southern States. Two of these being the Missouri Compromise and The Compromise of 1850. The Missouri Compromise stated that any state above the northern boundary of Missouri would be a free state and anything below it would be slave state. The Compromise of 1850 stated that any runaway slave that was found i the North would be captured and returned to their owner in return of California becoming a free state.
  • Georgia's involvement in the Missouri Compromise was minor. However Georgia did approve the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act.
