  • In the story, Millicent is in her basement sitting on a woodpile. Her basement is described as being warm, dark and isolated. This is symbolized by a sealed jar. "The basement room was warm and dark, like the inside of a sealed jar," (Plath 1)
  • Character (Millicent)
  • When Millicent is on the bus, she talks to a man who explains the Heather birds "Heather birds live on the mythological moors and fly about all day long, singing wild and sweet in the sun." (Plath 8) This quote describes the heather birds "singing."
  • Flashback
  • After Millicent realizes that she doesn't have to be in the sorority to fit in, she compares herself to the Heather bird. She believes that she is like the Heather bird because of their uniqueness and freedom. "Millicent thought of the Heather birds. Sweeping carefree over the moors, they would go singing and crying out across the great spaces of air, dipping and darting , strong and proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness."
  • Theme
  • After Millicent learns about the Heather birds, she ends up being independent and unique. She decides to be herself instead of trying to fit it by joining the sorority. "How she had proved something to herself by going through everything, even Rat Court, and then deciding not to join the sorority after all." (Plath 9)
  • In the story, Millicent has a flashback. Basically, she is reflecting on herself and the choices she has to make. "She could sec now that what she was sitting on was a woodpile next to the furnace." (Plath 1) The flashback took place on the woodpile.
  • The theme of this story is being different is okay, norms do not have to be followed to be accepted. "And she knew that her own private initiation had just begun." (Plath 10).
