Depression in "Catcher in the Rye"
Hi my name is Holden. I just got kicked out of Pencey for flunking my classes. Maybe it has to do with my younger brother dying.
Scene 1 - Stradlater's composition
I told you to write me a composition, not a paper about your dead brothers baseball mitt!
I was trying to do you a favor so you could go on a date and write your composition so you'd have it!
Scene 2 - Talking ducks with taxi driver
No you idiot, why would everything die? They all stay where they are or fly away somewhere warmer. They know how to survive these conditions.
Wait so your telling me that ducks don't just die when winter is coming?
16 year old Holden Caulfield is a sad and depressed person ever since his younger brother Allie had died from Leukemia. Because of this tragic death Holden is telling his story from a mental hospital after all the incidents that reminded him of Allie causing him to act out.
Stradlater asks Holden to write his composition while he goes on a date. Little does he know that he writes this important subject on his dead brother Allie's baseball mitt.
On the way to a hotel Holden asks of the taxi driver where ducks go during the winter thinking they all die along with all the fish. Holden is referring to his little brother Allie who had died and thinks death is all around him.
