This is about class room management on the first day of school and building a community from the very start.

- Building a Community Starts with a VISION! I am here early to write my statement of purpose on the board and greet students and parents early! I can answer some questions before school starts, and stay calm.
- I should organize my class now, write my statement of purpose on the board, and my name and class number on the door. I have already printed out copies for parents to sign and return, along with the class rules.
- I would also like to hear your opinions about the rules and ask that you turn to your elbow partner on your left, introduce yourself and see if they have any ideas for rules for the classroom? You can raise your hands after two minutes of talking, and tell me!
- • Statement of Purpose: In our classroom, we expect our students to learn individually, and as a group about many subjects that will be fun and interesting! We will respect and celebrate different cultures, personalities, and make our classroom a safe place! Together, with parents, staff and partners, our students will focus on good behavior, and think creatively to solve problems and find solutions. In our class, our minds have no limitations when we are reaching for our dreams!

- WELCOME NEW SCHOLARS! I am Mrs. Shelley! Welcome students to our class! I am so happy to meet you and your parents today! Please come inside!
- (Mrs. Shelley gives high fives to students!)
- Once you find your desks with your names on them, and your back pack hooks, please come and have a seat at the rug. You can ask me any questions by raising hands.
- Wow! I really like the way some of the students are already quietly sitting on the rug,, waiting for their classmates to join them! Good job!
- Building a community creates the building blocks that we make to join meetings, do research, self assessment. We use reflection to meet the needs of the students, and for them to feel comfortable within the school system wherever they go.

- Scholars, now that we have come together, I would like to go over the rules, and read our statement of purpose which is on the board.
- Now that we have gone over the rules, and you know the hand signals to use, I just want you to know that I can't wait to really get to know you and your parents. Let me tell you a little about myself for a few minutes, so you can get to know me!
- I would also like to talk to students about building a community. What is a community? Let's talk about that first. After that, you will go to our desks to write or draw about your favorite thing to do!
- I would like to encourage you and your parents to participate in many school events that will be happening at our school.
- Based on your participation and good behavior, I would love to give you a pizza party on a Friday, at the end of the month! I would also like you to bring in a picture of yourself so we can decorate our walls with your art, and some of our rules and positive sayings!
- Building a community means making time in our master schedule to collaborate with the community in meetings, letters home to parents, and giving students the power to lead the community in the future!
- Mrs. Shelley already has a form of her statement of purpose, what the daily routine will look like, what parents can expect their child to learn, and expectations of behavior.
- She will also write notes to parents when needed.
- Mrs. Shelley happily high fives the children and makes sure that she stays around to speak with any parents. She reminds the children to bring the signed copy of the rules back the next day.
