I the governor of Spain will destroy the Franks and their territories!
In 732 AD, the governor of Spain sets off with his men to end the tensions and battles on his northern border. However, he was also going on this journey to demolish Frankish territories.
Both armies, the Franks and the Arabs stood on opposite sides of the field waiting for one another to attack. The Franks were well dressed and prepared for the weather as the Arabs were having trouble with the cold and the difference in the amount of soldiers.
Finally, the fight began. It was the seventh day of the battle as Abd er Rahman, leader of the Arabs wanted to attack before the battle ended and there was no winner. The muslims stood on their horses and had weapons such as long swords and spears.
Let us celebrate with our croissants!
Along with the Arabs, the Franks also had lots of weapons and materials as shown above. They had many soldiers, swords, bow and arrows, and most importantly cavalry.
As the Franks were afraid they would be ambushed by the Arabs, the Muslims quietly retreated during the night as they were on the verge of death.
To celebrate their victory, Frankish bakers made bread and formed it into a crescent shape. The Islamic symbol was a crescent so by eating the croissants it meant eating the invader.
