The Family Of Little Feet
Four Skinny Trees
In the vignette Laughter, the author talks about how everyone´s laughter sounds. In the story, it says, ¨Not the shy ice cream bells´ giggle of Rachel and Lucy´s family, but all of a sudden like a pile of dishes breaking.¨ (Cisneros 17). This says that Esperanza and Nenny´s laugh isn´t as gentle and dainty as Rachel and Lucy´s. This is a simile because it uses like or as.
In the vignette The Family Of Little Feet, The author explains how the girls try on some fancy shoes and feel super fancy. They get some unwanted attention from older men instead of the attention of the people they wanted. Esperanza thinks,¨a paper bag with one pair of lemon shoes,¨(Cisneros 40). This means to say that there are yellow shoes but the author went the more descriptive way and said lemon shoes instead. This is a metaphor because the author doesn´t use like or as.
In the vignette Four Skinny Trees, Esperanza talks about the trees in front of her house. The author says, ¨Four skinny trees with skinny necks and pointy elbows like mine.¨( Cisneros 74). This shows that Esperanza pays a lot of attention to her surroundings. This is personification because it is saying that the trees have elbows and and necks even thought they don´t.
