- Janie had finally head off to Jacksonville with Teacake. Everything seemed to be looking up for her. This allows us to feel some of the first real optimism in the story, for Janie.
- However, Janie is still very worried Teacake is after her money and couldn't possibly be in love with her. With this in her mind she hides $200 in her dress. Janie's life and experiences forbibs her to trust anyone at this point even someone she loves.
- When Janie wakes up one morning to find that Teacake has left, she tries to rationalize the situation in every way possible before concluding the worst, that he may have left her. At this point in the story we are rooting for the relationship and Janie's happiness. By "stunting" our hope in this section, the author allows us to feel the pain and hopelessness Janie is feeling in this situation. Especially when she comes to find that the money is no longer in her dress.
- The money is gone!
- Tea cake explains to Janie that he felt so overjoyed when finding the money that he went a spent it and had a big party. They have a fight because Janie is upset she was not told about or invited to this party. This situation is the first example or sign of a possible deteriorating relationship.
- After a test of there relationship through trust and gambling, the two move to their own land and re-begin what seems like a dream to Janie.
