  • Paul's Case
  • Pittsburgh High School
  • "Paul was always smiling, always glancing around him, seeming to feel that people might be watching him and trying to detect something. "
  • The first sigh of the instruments seemed to free some hilarious and potent spirit within him- something that struggled there like the genius in the bottle found by the Arab fisherman."
  • By Ethan Schaer Mrs. O' Neill Period 6-7
  • "But mocking spirits stood guard at the doors, and, as the rain beat in his face, Paul wondered whether he were destined always to shiver in the black night outside, looking up at it."
  • Paul has just been suspended from his school, Pittsburgh high school and arrives at a meeting where he must talk with the principal and his teachers. His physical appearance is described and is symbolized with reference to the red carnation that he appears to wear throughout the story. While Paul is scorned by his teachers "without mercy," he continues to uphold a smile showing almost no true emotion.
  • He "sat looking distrustfully at the dark, still terrified least he might have awakened to his father. In such reactions, after one of the experiences which made days and nights out of the dreary blanks of the calendar, when his senses were deadened, Paul's head was always singularly clear."
  • Paul serves as an usher in Carnegie Hall, and this evening he decided to go directly to his job rather than his house for supper, where he excitedly gets changed into his uniform and is teased by the other boys who work alongside him. Suppressed by the boys, Paul hurries out to the front of the house where he completes his job, running up and down the aisles with great joy and pride."
  • He happened to be the young man who was daily held up to Paul as a model, and after whom it was his father's dearest hope that he would pattern."
  • After the concert is finished, Paul is described to be irritable until he was able to get some sleep, but on this night he was more restless than usual. When the singer and star of the concert came out, Paul followed her and her carriage over to the hotel where Paul seemingly imagined himself to also enter the building, dreaming of the wonders of the wealthy and rich that he desires but truly are unattainable.
  • Paul , when he decides not to enter hrough the front of his house, he instead sneaks through one of the back windows of his basement, hoping not to be caught by his father. Paul then ponders upon the possible consequences of his dad discovering him in the basement.
  • Paul's father is engaged in a conversation with a young and successful clerk, who his father hopes that one day Paul would be like him. While many people are outside, including playful and children and his sisters, Paul is still unhappy and annoyed by the conversation between his dad and the young man about t such wealth and success.
