Atticus teaches his kids to be respectful to Mrs. Dubose even though she is extremely rude to Atticus because all she needs is a little compassion
"Easy does it, son... She’s an old lady and she’s ill. You just hold your head high and be a gentleman. Whatever she says to you, it’s your job not to let her make you mad."
Atticus is trying to teach his kids the value of having respect for all living things, no matter if they are significant to them or not.
I'd rather you shoot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.
Atticus is trying to explain to his brother that he needs to respect kids enough to bee straight with them because they are more knowledgable than he thinks. Atticus knows if he respects his kids then they will respect him.
"When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em."
Always have respect for everyone, no matter the differences between you and them.
