Storyboard Text

  • In May 1856, ardent abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts delivered a two-day antislavery speech entitled   "The Crime Against Kansas."
  • South Carolina was the "Don Quixote of slavery"
  • The speech also demonstrated Sumner's  personal anger towards South Carolina's Senator Andrew Butler .
  • Senator Butler has chosen a mistress. I mean the harlot of slavery.
  • This fool is gon get killed by some other fool.
  •  Only the extreme abolitionists were supportive of this, while moderates considered his speech to be un-American.
  • I support
  • This is very unamerican.
  • Three days later, Preston Brooks (representative of South Carolina) attacked Sumner with a cane in response to the speech. Sumner was severely crippled.
  • I am here to punish you since you libeled my state and Butler!
  • Many northerners were outraged by the violence against antislavery. Brooks was fined for assault. Charles Sumner was kept away from the Senate for next couple of years.
  • :(
  • I was fined $300  for assaulting you
  • Sumner became a martyr to the barbarism south. In the South, Brooks became a hero. This demonstrated southern brutality. Violence from Kansas has spilled into the national level.
  • Why
  • I am going to deliver new canes to Brooks:)
  • o no
