  • Flashback
  • Seated now on the woodpile in Betsy Johnson's cellar, Millicent knew that she had come triumphant through the trial of fire, the searing period of the ego which could end in two kinds of victory for her. Seated now on the woodpile in Betsy Johnson's cellar, Millicent knew that she had come triumphant through the trial of fire, the searing period of the ego which could end in two kinds of victory for her.
  • "Seated now on the woodpile in Betsy Johnson's cellar, Millicent knew that she had come triumphant through the trial of fire, the searing period of the ego which could end in two kinds of victory for her." (Plath 9)
  • Simile
  • "The basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar,"
  • Symbol
  • But just then, from somewhere faroft~ Millicent was sure ofit, therecame a melodic fluting, quite wild and sweet, and she knew that it must be the song of the heather birds as they went wheeling and gliding against wide blue horizons through vast spaces ofair, their wings flashing quick and purple in the bright sun.
  • "But just then, from somewhere far off, Millicent was sure of it, there came a melodic fluting, quite wild and sweet, and she knew that it must be the song of the heather birds as they went wheeling and gliding against wide blue horizons through vast spaces of air, their wings flashing quick and purple in the bright sun." (Plath 9)
  • This flashback shows that after Millicent's flashback she comes up with her final decision. Her final decision was to not be a follower and be individual. She took a lot of time to think about the decision.
  • Character Bev
  • "I wanted to warn you that she's the toughest, but if you get through all right it'll be all the more credit for you."
  • "I wanted to warn you that she's the toughest, but if you get through all right it'll be all the more credit for you." (Plath 5)
  • The simile shows that the room that Millicent was in was very small and confined. It seems like she was in an eerie place. The mood was set as very mysterious and eeire.
  • Imagery
  • "The silence was soft with cobwebs, and from the small, rectangular window set high in the stone wall there sifted a faint bluish light that must be coming from the full October moon ." (Plath 1)
  • The heather birds were a symbol of independence, individuality, and uniqueness. They were compared to the flock of sparrows which were a symbol of followers. Millicent thought of herself as a heather bird when she made her decision and was very unique and independent..
  • Theme
  • "How she had proved something to herself by going through everything, even Rat Court, and then deciding not to join the sorority after all." (Plath 9)
  • This quote indirectly is describing Bev. It is showing that Bev is not a good person to be with for initiation. Bev is described as very mean and tough. That's why Millicent will get more credit for surviving initiation.
  • The quote puts an image in the reader's head. It puts a dark quiet room in your head. The imagery also has a kind of mysterious and eerie tone. The way that Plath describes the room is kind of creepy.
  • When Millicent makes her final decision as shown in the quote the theme is changed. It started out with wanting acceptance from other people. Throughout the story it then changed to finding ways to accept yourself is more important than other people's acceptance.
