Also the "death" of Valentine almost led to the suiside of Maximillion though the Count stopped him.
Another death has occurred in the Villefort house making three. Madame de Saint Meran, Barois (Noirtier's servant), and now 9or so it seems) Valentine. Now that there is an obvious murderer in the house they somewhat reveal themselves, it was the wife of the household. This was shocking for Villefort to have his wife kill his own daughter. Though in reality she is only asleep do to one of The Count's pills but no one knows that she isn't dead not even her attempted murderer.
During the signing of the marriage contract between Eugenie Danglar and Andrea Cavalcanti, Andrea was uncovered as Bendetto and escaped while being chased by the police for murder. After this Eugenie ran away, though both were caught one went to jail to other left to become a nun. After this, The Count came to Danglar to take out his money from an account leaving Danglar in debt. The banker Danglar soon left with only a letter to his wife telling her of the debt he left her.
Villefort was doing his job as a public prosecutor during Bendetto's trial for the murder of Caderousse. Bendetto was being asked general questions of himself but when he was asked his name he said he was unable to give his name do to the fact he was abandoned. He also told the court that his father's name was Villefort and had proof of this. soon after this statement he explained how his father tried to bury him to death and Villefort headed home to his wife. He had hoped to stop her from taking her life. As before he left for the trial Villefort confronted his wife about his daughter's murder and told her to poison herself for her crimes as not to ruin her son.
Though when Villefort got home he found not only his wife dead but his only son had been killed as well. The Count though had been in Valentines room dressed as the Abbe praying for her. He met Villefort outside his office as disclosed his actual identity to the ruined Villefort but The Count hadn't realized Villefort's son was dead and when he found the boy he tried to save him but to no avail. This death of the only son was seen as beyond vengeance even by The Count though it was not directly his fault.
Maxemillion and The Count leave Paris and its crumbling society and stop in Marseille. Mercedes is also here saying goodbye to her now soldier son. This is also where the Count and Mercedes say there final goodbyes.
