Back them, most of the Frankish people couldn't read or write. Then Charlemagne decided to make his palace located at Aachen a place for learning.
He created a school for training children to be royal officials to work either in the palace or church. Subjects that were taught were grammar, logic, and math.
Charlemagne was able to pay scholars from all over Europe to come and teach at his school using his money from looting foreign lands. Also, he had a book for writing under the pillow of his church which he used to practice his hand writing.
