I had forgotten that I was talking to the mighty bear, and only when I finish my story do I realize that he is nodding his great black head. “You make the trail, Stardust. You make the trail, climber of mountains, you.”
And then he’s gone. The birds look to me for what to do next. Pushing aside the saplings and skirting some boulders, we begin to climb.
Several hours in, my shoulders ache with the weight of the world, and my legs scream to stop. The birds’ wings droop with exhaustion, and the sun climbs higher and higher into the autumn sky.
