The narrator realizes that Jerry is actually a hardworking, determined,loyal boy.
"My mother doesn't live far from here. You remind me of her."
Jerry tells her that he has a mom that lives in Mannville. She occasionally sends him gifts.
"Really now? I had no idea you had a mother."
The Narrator talks to Miss Clark about Jerry's mom. She soon finds out that Jerry actually doesn't have a mother.
"I wouldn't want to re-create the things his mother gave him. Like those skates."
"But he has no mother. There are no skates."
