  • Commerce Visited Whangaroa
  • Pocket watch dropped into sea
  • Boyd visited Whangaroa
  • Captain Serone and the commerce visited the Whangaroa Harbour on their way back to Nelgnad in 1807.
  • Crew Lured Inland
  • In Whangaroa Harbour, captain Serone showed the Maori a pocket watch and then dropped it into the sea, which the Maori then believed to be cursed.
  • Only 4 Survivors
  • In 1809, the Boyd visited Whangaroa Harbour, not knowing they were entering a trap because the Maori wanted Utu because of the Boyds captain mistreated one of their chiefs.
  • Cannibalism
  • The Maoris lured the crew into a trap and then killed most of the crew and took their equipment, clothes etc. They then burned the boat down.
  • The Maori did not kill all of them. Tom Davis, who helped the mistreated chief. A little girl and a woman and her baby were used as slaves.
  • The Maori cooked the dead bodies up and ate them after killing the people.
