Harriet married a man named John Tubman in 1844. John was a free man and Harriet wanted to be free too.
In 1849 Harriet's owner died and Harriet learned that she may be sold to a new plantation. She deiced to run away. Harriet ran away on September 17, 1849 she left with her to brothers. They followed the north star.She got a job in Philadelphia as a house keeper.
Harriet Tubman helped soldiers fight in the civil war. She would go to house from house to be free she called it the Underground Railroad. Harriet want back to the South in 1850 to help her sister and her sister's children to freedom. Harriet would go back and forth 13 times to help other slaves. She led over 700 slaves to freedom.
