Jesus was entering Jericho and was passing through. A man named Zacchaeus was there. He was the chief tax collector and was very wealthy.
He wanted to see who Jesus was and because he was such a short man, he couldn't see over the crowd. So he ran to the nearest tree and climbed it to get a better view.
When Jesus reached a certain spot, he looked up at Zacchaeus and said, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today."
So he came down right away and welcomed him. Everyone saw this and began to whisper, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner."
Zacchaeus stood up for himself and said, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
Jesus said to Zacchaeus, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
