Impressment was when the British took U.S. sailors that were going to trade in foreign countries and forced them to fight for Britain.
The British were in a war with France and needed to sailors to fight against the French Navy. They thought it was right to take Americans because the Americans were once part of Britain.
In order to stop this, the U.S. passed the Embargo Act, which banned foreign trade. However, it backfired and hurt the United States' economy as much of the economy was foreign trade. Sailors and merchants became unemployed.
