Bonjour! My name is Olympe de Gouges. I was born with the name Marie Gouze but I changed my name after my husband died and I began writing plays.
I was born on May 7 , 1748 in Montaubon, France
I had always been interested in writing plays and books about equality but I didn't start until I got married and realized what everyone thought women's jobs were.
Other things I wrote about were discrimination, violence, oppression, and the rights of illegitimate children.
One of the challenges I faced was that I didn't know how to read and write most of my life. My grammar and punctuation was bad so I couldn't really write plays. I over came this and taught myself how to read and write.
Another challenge I faced was getting people to take me and my plays seriously. People attacked me because they thought women didn't belong in theater.
I was sent to jail for three months without an attorney. I tried to defend my self but it didn't work. I was beheaded on November 3, 1973.
I think that I accomplished a lot even though my life was cut short. I gave women more rights and changed the way people thought about women. I also gave more rights to slaves and illegitimate children.
