  • Jefferson and Madison believed a strong and strict interpretation of the constitution.
  • The Kentucky Resolutions
  • 3 French agents demanded a bribe and loan from the Americans. This became known as the XYZ affair, one agent was considered X and the other two agents were Y and Z.
  • The Alien and Sedition Acts were passed by congress to protect the nation's security. It allowed immigrants without citizenship to be imprisoned or kicked out of the country if they were considered dangerous.
  • The Kentucky resolutions suggested that laws that were considered unconstitutional should be legally overthrown.
  • The principle of states' rights stated that federal governments power should be limited to those clearly assigned to it by the constitution.
