"That was just a... meteor or something."
Fear and suspicion are destructive forces
Evidence 2: Charlie: "You sound real anxious to have that happen, Steve. We better keep an eye on you too.
"You sound real anxious to have that happen, Steve. We better keep an eye on you too."
Evidence 3: Charlie: "No more talk, Steve. You're going to talk us into a grave. You'd let whatever out there walk right over us, wouldn't yuh? Well, some of us won't!"
Steve here is scared for what the truth could be about the object that flew by right before him and Charlie were to go to the police station. He realizes that he needs to calm everyone down so says that its a meteor but starts to pretty much deny himself making him not sure what else to say else he can say because he is scared of what the truth is about the flying object.
In this scene, Charlie is at his home with his wife and is talking to her and overhears Steve's conversation while at home talking about how Les Goodman is hiding something but Charlie believes he is the one hiding something and ignores the fact that he will ruin their friendship and states that ,"we better keep an eye on you too", saying that he is trying to blame Les Goodman so that they don't accuse him as the alien.
As a mysterious object appears in the near distance, the group start to believe that it is the monster. Charlie gets ahold of a gun from Steve when he states that they should find out what it actually is but Charlie takes matters into his own hands and shoot the object. He was scared of it being the monster that he shot it and it turned out to be Pete Van Horton and then realizes his mistake after going towards the body.
