  • Did you know that godwits fly for about 11,000 to 12,000 km
  • Look a godwit
  • Once it's winter in New Zealand that is when godwits leave to Alaska
  • Why do we go on long trips?
  • hmmm? I don't know...
  • But then why do we have to leave Alaska?
  • For us godwits Alaska is our home, but...
  • Well technically, Almost all New Zealand birds are from the baueri subspecies breeding in western Alaska. Godwits do not breed until the fourth year.
  • Fine, How do we migrate?
  • we leave Alaska when it is summer in New Zealand
  • Well we are large long legged wader birds with a long slightly upturned or straight bill. Typically they have a reddish brown head and breast in the breeding season. They also have webbed feet.
  • What do we like again?
  • Godwits migrate in Alaska
  • fly for 11,000, to 12,000 km
  • They come to Tahuna Torea
  • What have you learnt from your short trip?
