Storyboard Text

  • Jimmy wants to know the difference between a generator and an electric motor...
  • So generators don't produce any only convert it, wow.
  • Electric motor compared to a generator. A generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy obtained from an outside source, whereas an electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
  • Electromagnetism is the interaction of electric currents or fields and magnetic fields.
  • Hmm, how do the electrical currents or magnetic fields produce energy?
  • Well Jimmy, the electric current flowing through a wire produces a magnetic field outside the wire and the magnetic field does the opposite.
  • The vacuum, washing machine and refrigerator are all machines that use electric motors.
  • How are any of those machines useful in society?
  • It is useful in society as people can clean their clothes quicker.
  • Blue = Fixed outer drum. Red = Rotating inner drum (with holes). The electric motor turns the inner drum typically using a rubber belt (yellow)
  • A refrigerator contains an induction motor that compresses ammonia gas. The coils at the back of the fridge allow the heat to dissipate and condenses into ammonia liquid. This liquid flows through the expansion valve then it evaporates, reducing the temperature to -32.8C.
  • Have any of those inventions changed the world?
  • I believe that it  has changed the world as it allows people to preserve their food for longer allowing them to not go hungry.
  • Coal can be used to create energy.
  • I'm confused, how can coal create energy?
  • Well Jimmy, coal is burned, creating steam. This steam spins a turbine connected to a generator and the generator does the rest.
