  • In the North, they manufactured things like coal, lumber, and furs to make money. These jobs brought immigrants to the city for jobs, which is what we call urbanization.
  • Since the economy was based on manufacturing, many people worked in the factories
  • Negro bathroom
  • Even if you were free in the North, there was still segregation, separating you from white people.
  • White bathroom
  • The economy in the south was based on cash crops such as indigo, sugar cane, tobacco, and most important- cotton. These were grown on plantations.
  • Slave codes gave slave owners complete control over the slaves, who worked on plantaions for free and were treated worse than animals.
  • Former slaves in the South were very mistreated still, and disrespected.
