In the North, they manufactured things like coal, lumber, and furs to make money. These jobs brought immigrants to the city for jobs, which is what we call urbanization.
Since the economy was based on manufacturing, many people worked in the factories
Even if you were free in the North, there was still segregation, separating you from white people.
The economy in the south was based on cash crops such as indigo, sugar cane, tobacco, and most important- cotton. These were grown on plantations.
Slave codes gave slave owners complete control over the slaves, who worked on plantaions for free and were treated worse than animals.
Former slaves in the South were very mistreated still, and disrespected.
