Passing by the knothole tree, they see a ball of twine resting inside it. Scout wants to take it, but Jem thinks it might be someone's hiding spot. When the twine is still there after a few days, Jem takes it, and from then on there are no more qualms about taking things found in the knothole.
Scout throws them on the ground, thinking about voodoo dolls, but Jem rescues them. Who could have made them?
Jem, found cement covered in the tree he wonder who did it, later that day he told his sister Scout then, they both end up looking the person who done it and ask them why they done it.
The next day Jem went to talk to Mr. Atticus if he knew anything about the hole in the tree. Which he soon said he was the one that covered the hole.
That afternoon Jem couldn't stop thinking about the tree that Mr. Atticus covered he still wondered if it is going to appear later on or if it's someone property.
