  • The Russians were vastly underprepared for WWI, losing about 15% of their total population to the war.
  • Russian Civil War 1918-19
  • In February 1917, Russian workers revolted. Czar Nicholas II abdicated his throne, and the Duma were placed in charge of Russia.
  • Indus. and Agricult.
  • The Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, quickly took power in 1917. Lenin rapidly abolishes private property and establishes peace with Germany.
  • Stalin's Purges
  • The Russian Civil War pitted the Reds against the Whites. The Reds were loyal to Lenin and the Bolsheviks, while the Whites were loyal to Czar Nicholas.
  • Joseph Stalin took power after Lenin's death, and made high, perhaps unreasonable, demands of factory and farm owners. He asked that Russia double its industrial output every year, and that state-owned farms replace private ones.
  • After establishing a totalitarian government, Stalin proceeded to kill hundreds of government officials that opposed him or threatened his power.
