  • Theme, Claim, and Authors purpose The Old Man and the Sea Demo Task Justice Cole November 13, 2017
  •  The theme of The Old Man and the Sea is to never give up on something you are passionate about
  • Even though the fish didn’t stop giving Santiago trouble throughout the night, he kept on trying to catch the fish because he was passionate about fishing. This isn’t just about Santiago though, this also is directed at the audience showing them that they shouldn’t give up on something is they are truly passionate about it. Hemingway is just using Santiago as an example because if the intended audience is fishermen or people who love fishing, they will be able to make a better connection and be able to relate to Santiago and his struggles during the Old Man and the Sea easily.
  • “The fish never changed his course nor his direction [46] all that night as far as the man could tell from watching the stars. It was cold after the sun went down and the old man’s sweat dried cold on his back and his arms and his old legs. During the day he had taken the sack that covered the bait box and spread it in the sun to dry. After the sun went down he tied it around his neck so that it hung down over his back and he cautiously worked it down under the line that was across his shoulders now. The sack cushioned the line and he had found a way of leaning forward against the bow so that he was almost comfortable. The position actually was only somewhat less intolerable; but he thought of it as almost comfortable. I can do nothing with him and he can do nothing with me, he thought. Not as long as he keeps this up” (PDF page 12)
  • Hemingway made Santiago very much like himself and there was no information in the book used to persuade and/or inform
  • Hemingway's purpose for writing The Old and the Sea was to entertain.
  • The symbol for the author's purpose is the fish because it symbolizes strength and Hemingway is known for writing very strong literary pieces.
  • The intended audience for The Old Man and the Sea is people who enjoy fishing. It is shown that people who enjoy fishing are the intended audience because Hemingway uses examples of issues that really only fisherman could really relate to.
