  • Charlie requests, "Since you appear to care about the young lady, perhaps you could ask around or at least listen for any news about her" (Pratchett 10)

  • Dodger thought "Solomon was right; if you lived on the streets, that where you died" (Pratchett 37)
  • Dodger crawls from the sewer to defend a foreign girl who fell out of a coach. Dodger attacked and chased off the assailant. He is recognized as heroic and he and the girl are taken in for the night.

  • The girl croaked, "My mother always said that if anyone got to England, they would be free. Do not let them take me back, sir--I do not want to go" (Pratchett 19).
  • Charlie, one of the people took them in, asks Dodger about what happened and who the girl is. Dodger is offered money to investigate and find out who she is and why she was beaten.
  • Propelling the Action
  • She asks, "Can I trust you, Dodger? I think I might be able to trust a man who has fought valiantly for a woman he doesn't even know" (Pratchett 90).

  • Solomon gives Dodger advice given the circumstances. After the death of a fellow tosher and the offer that Dodger received, he is about to begin a life that will lead to something, rather than just surviving on the streets.
  • Outcome

  • She whispers to Dodger, "You will make them pay!" (Pratchett 142).
  • Dodger saved the foreign woman from the people who captured her. She tells Dodger as much of her history as she can afford to, and asks for assurance that he will help her.
  • She trusts Dodger and sees him as an ally. She has told him about some of her past and knows that he knows the game of life and its hardships. Every time he has come to visit her, she has been happy to be with someone she can trust.
  • She tells Dodger that they can enact revenge on the people who captured her. She is very enthusiastic about it and Dodger seems happy to help. He will do what he can to help her. They are very close to one another and are forming a romantic relationship.
