  • Returning from a battle with his prizes Hippolyta and her sister Emily, Theseus is asked to resolve a conflict in Thebes. He then captures two knights, Arcite and Palamon, who are near death. He declares them to be prisoners in Athens for the rest of their lives.
  • Climax
  • While imprisoned, Arcite and Palamon see Emily and fall in love with her. Arcite is set free by a famous Duke but cannot return to Athens, while Palamon is left in captivity. Both wish they were in the other's place
  • Falling Action
  • Because of their love for Emily, Arcite disguises himself and returns to Athens, while Palamon escapes from prison. They meet and challenge each other to a duel. However, Theseus breaks up the duel, and arranges a tournament in a year's time for Emily's hand in marriage.
  • Resolution
  • Palamon, Arcite, and Emily pray to their respective gods for help. This causes a conflict between the gods Mars, Venus, and Diana. Their father, Saturn, comes up with a solution that resolves the conflict. During the tournament, Arcite defeats Palamon.
  • In a stunning twist of fate, Arcite's horse throws him into the air and gravely injures him. In his last words, Arcite says goodbye to Emily and tells her that she should marry Palamon, a worthy knight.
  • Arcite is buried with great honor and a few years later, Palamon marries Emily and they live happily ever after.
