It was Winter break during sixth grade. Our family had come down to Florida to visit relatives, and so far everything had been as fun and happy as always.
At least, it had been.
This vacation had been planned to see relatives and have a good time, but there was also another reason. You see, my uncle had been diagnosed with brain cancer several years earlier, and now he was confined to a bed.
Just the past year he had visited us for Christmas; on his feet, talking, and seeming happy.
And now he was confined to a bed, unable to talk and we didn't even know if he could hear us anymore.
It was hard on me and my family, but it was even harder for his. My cousins were especially choked up, no longer able to tell if their father could even hear them.
