Fertilisers are used on agriculture
When it rains, the fertilisers are absorbed by the soil and ends up in rivers and lakes
The increased amount of nitrate and phosphate in the water encourages algae and plant growth
The lack of sunlight prevents them from photosynthesizing and leads to them dying
The algae bloom prevents sunlight from passing through to reach the other aquatic plants.
Bacteria breaks down the dead plants and use up the oxygen in the water through respiration
This creates a 'dead zone' lacking sufficient oxygen to support most organisms
... and this process is known as "eutrophication"
