Storyboard Description

Odysseus goes to the underworld to talk to Tiresias.

Storyboard Text

  • Odysseus and his crew "arrive and find the place to which Circe has directed them."
  • After Odysseus arrives to the underworld he says that he would "slaughter [his] best heifer" for the "breathless dead, and "swore to sacrifice a black lamb, handsomest of all [the] flock. Then he {pledged these rites" and slashed the lamb and ewe "letting their black blood stream into wellpit"
  • While in the underworld Odysseus sees his old crew member... Elpenor. Elpenor tells Odysseus how he died and that he would appreciate a proper burial.
  • " fire my corpse, and all the gear I had, and build a cairn for me above the breakers-an unknown sailor's mark for men to come.
  • "Unhappy spirit, I promise you the barrow and the burial."
  • "Son of Laertes"
  • "I see destruction for ship and crew. Though you survive alone, bereft of all companions, lost for years, under strange sail shall you come home"
  • Tiresias tells Odysseus what the future holds before him.
  • " a seaborne death soft as this hand of mist will come upon you when you are wearied out with rich old age, your country folk in blesed peace around you.
  • Before leaving the underworld Odysseus speaks to his mother, who explains to him what has been happening in Ithaca,and how she is in the underworld.
  • "Penelope and Telemachus are still grieving for [you] and that [your] father, Laertes, has moved to the country, where he, too, mourns his son. '
  • " [I] died from a broken heart.
  • After speaking with the "spirits of many great ladies and men who died, as well as those who were being punished for their earthly sins", Odysseus and his crew set sail for Circe's Island...again.
