At length Montresor would be avenged, this is a point definitly settled. Fortunato accosted Montresor with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much.
There were no attendants at home as Montresor planned, I had told them not to return until morning, and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house. I well knew, to insure there immediate disappearance, one had all, as soon as my back was turned.
I took from the sconces flambeaux, and given one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting hime to be cautious as he followed.
In painting and gemmary Fortunato like his countrymen, was a quack but in the manner of old wines he was sincere. The gait of my friend was unsteady, and the bells upon his cap jingled as he strode. Drink, I said presenting him more wine.
We recoiled as we got to the hallway of long walls of piled skeletons. Fortunato became subsided as he drank to much wine.
For Fortunato it was termination, whispered Montresor. Montresor precluded, for Fortunato was trapped. Inside the wall Fortunato was trapped. For half the century no mortal has disturbed him.
Ha! Ha! a very good joke.
