The story begins as Rainsford and Whitney head towards Rio in a yacht. Whitney describes the island that they pass as Ship-Trap-Isand, and behind it all the legends of the island. However, Rainsford thinks that his stories are make-believe.
After falling off the yacht, Rainsford lands on Ship-Trap-Island. He finds a mansion where he is granted great hospitality by Zaroff. However, he learns the ugly truth. Zacroff hunts humans for fun!
The next day, Rainsford is forced to play the most dangerous game--being hunted. Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting for different goals, Zaroff for fun and amusement and Rainsford for survival and escape.
Rainsford is cornered by Zaroff's dogs. He jumps off the cliff and into the sea. Zaroff thinks that Rainford is dead, but Rainsford survives the dangerous fall.
Rainsford turns back to the mansion and hides in Zaroff's bedroom. After Zaroff finds Rainsford, they start to fight--whoever loses gets fed to the dogs, whoever wins gets to have a good night's sleep.
Zaroff has lost the fight and was fed to the dogs . Rainsford has won the most dangerous game and can now sleep in peace.
