  • Mathilde Loisel is invited to a party, but realizes she does not have a dress. Her husband gives her money for a dress and she borrows a diamond necklace from her friend. Mathilde has a great night at the party, and was admired by all.

  • Mathilde loses the diamond necklace and can't find it anywhere.

  • Madame Loisel must find a way to replace the lost necklace.
  • For ten years, Madame and Monsieur Loisel worked to pay off debts and loans used to purchase a new necklace. They lived in poverty.
  • When Mathilde saw Madame Forestier on the street, she told her her the truth about how she lost the necklace. Madame Forestier couldn't believe how much she payed for a new necklace. She told Mathilde hers was false and only worth a small sum of money.
