  • In 222 BC the Qin dynasty collapsed many people fought for power and after a few years of fighting Liu Bang got control. He was the first emperor of the Han dynasty. Leo Bang was the first peasant to become an emperor which made him more popular with citizen. Leo bang made many new policies and laws such as making punishment less harsh and making tax reductions for farmers.
  • 60 years later in 140 BC Emperor Wudi wanted to make a stronger China so he raised taxes, he took land away from the lords and he controlled the production of grains. People were also all divided into 4 social classes. The upper class consisted of the emperor, his court and the emperors family. The peasants were the largest class ,another class was the the artisans who were like the middle class. Merchants were the lowest class because the did not produce anything. People in the military were not considered to be in a class.
  • During the Han dynasty paper was invented by grinding plant fibres like mulberry bark and hemp. They made it into paste and then they let it dry in the shape of sheets. They used these to make scroll to send messages. The sun dial was also invented which was a contraption that could tell the time according to the position of the sun. They also invented the seismograph which is a devise which can tell the strength of an earthquake.
  • From 133 Bc to 89 Bc the Han dynasty spent a lot of money to try to conquer the nomads but they did not succeed. In 9 AD Wang Mang took control of China in a coup. 3 years later the yellow river changed course which meant many farmers did not have water. This caused a lot of people to revolt and bandits and governors tried to take power which led to a lot of fighting for the next 17 AD. Liu Xiu took control of China and he established Eastern Han. He was a close relative of the last Han emperor.
  • Liu Xiu didn't give a lot of power to noble men to prevent them from becoming a threat. He also promoted studying among people. He also was successful in the wars against the nomads.
  • Liu Hong was a bad emperor who gave too much power to eunuchs. Because the country was badly run there was a lot of poverty. The Yellow Turban Revolt took place 184 AD. 5 years later he died and the Han Dynasty
