  • When bringing friends to the bar: Make sure Hirsch and Feinberg don't see each other -- or else they will argue about cultural literacy (traditional vs transactional).
  • A way a teacher can approach teaching controversial issues is asking students what they know about the topic before approaching the issue.
  • citizenship is a verb that means an individual who is informed, practicing and participating in ideas such as democracy, nationality, equality and diversity -- while constructing a civic identity.
  • Do not assume that things are going to change without someone taking initiative. Teachers need to be the change that is necessary for social studies to become a vital part in the classrooms once more.
  • One instructional shifts recommended by C3 is to craft questions that spark and sustain an inquiry.
  • Blanchette stated that there is a line between education and indoctrination. Teachers should allow students to identify their bias on different viewpoints and encourage them to come to independent conclusions.
