Two Minutes Hate: Every Party member is required to participate in Two Minutes Hate, an event where traitors of the Party are broadcast, saying terrible things about the Party, and the members get riled up and insult the "traitor" back.
Ministry of Truth: Winston works here, altering documents so that the Party is reflected in the most positive light. He often has to change old news that either had "vaporized" people in it, predicted something incorrectly, or had a promise that the Party broke.
The Chestnut Tree Cafe: Winston recalls him seeing three ex-Party members, then deemed traitors, sitting in the Chestnut Tree Cafe, a place for those who the Party have denounced. He thinks about how he saw a photograph that proved that these three members did not commit the treason they had confessed to.
The Prostitute: Winston reflects back on the time a few years ago where he was unable to suppress the urge for sex and went into a lit basement with a prostitute. By the time he realized she was old and unattractive, it was too late. In this world, engaging in sex for pleasure is illegal.
The Bomb: Once while walking through the prole neighborhood, Winston experiences a bombing and finds body parts and blood strewn about in the aftermath. This reveals the true "lowliness" of prole life and how unequal the Ingsoc society is.
The Dark-Haired Girl: Winston started noticing a dark-haired girl constantly following him, and he initially suspected her of being the Thought Police. He later found out at work that she followed him because she was in love with him. Love, something that is deeply forbidden by Big Brother, becomes a silent rebellion technique for Winston and the girl.
