Alice Cogswell was a young deaf girl in the 1800's who had little way of communicating to everyone.
All the teachers who taught sign language were very costly and the only school who taught sign language was in London.
Alice's father even tried to establish a school in Connecticut for deaf children, but with no avail.

that's when they met Thomas Gallaudet a graduate from Yale university and a new friend of his Laurent Clerc who wanted to help the deaf people in america.
Gallaudet and Clerc built a school for Alice and all the other deaf people and called it The American School for the Deaf.
Gallaudet was the principle until 1830.
