Storyboard Text

  • Both England and France had monarchs that tried to centralize their power.
  • The church had more power than the kings did in medieval times. Monarchs tried to undermine church and feudal courts, develop a tax system, build a standing army, and strengthen their ties with the middle class.
  • Some of the monarchs like King John of England were greedy, cruel, untrustworthy, and not very well liked.
  • The crusades began as a command from Pope Urban ll to take back the holy land. Saladin, the most well-known general of the crusades, was the reason the Muslims took back their control of Jerusalem.
  • Go fight and reclaim the holy land!
  • The 1st crusade was the only crusade that came close to taking back the holy land. However, the crusades increased trade, increased the use of money economy, and let peasants pay rent.
  • The Black Death caused a huge loss in life and caused a plunge in economics.
  • Because of how many people died, there were fewer workers. That meant fewer products and goods that could be traded. The fewer amount of people meant there was less of a demand for products.
  • I'm one of the 1/3 of Europe's population died, which is more than 70 million people.
  • The Hundred Years' War was fought between Britain and France. The cause was the English king trying to remain in control of his land in France.
  • In the beginning, the British were winning the war because of the invention of the longbow. Then, Joan of Arc began to lead the French armies and the French also began to use canons. The end of the war left England with only a small port in north western France.
  • The greatest achievements of the middle ages were the cathedrals. There were 2 types of architecture for the cathedrals: Romanesque and Gothic.
  • One type of cathedral architecture was the Romanesque. They had thick walls and towers. The roof was usually the main part of the structure and was very heavy. There were usually no windows in these cathedrals.
  • The other type of cathedral is the Gothic structure. These cathedrals had flying buttresses, high walls, and stained glass windows.
  • There were two technological developments during the time of the Hundred Years' War: the longbow and the canon.
  • The canon helped the French army capture English-held castles and defeat the English army.
  • The longbow was an advancement that helped the British. The bow could shoot 3 arrows in the time it took a normal bow to shoot one. It was six feet long and it could pierce the heaviest armor.
