  • Symbol
  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • The Ibis symbolizes Doodle,The ibis is a endangered species because of the loss of the rain forest in South America. Doodle is like the Ibis he does not belong in his environment he is physically misshaped and his learning is backwards and no one expects anything from him because the ibis's legs are broke and he does not think it is going to make it like his parents did not think he would make it either.
  • Theme
  • The coffin symbolizes Doodle's death because his parents and family did not think he would survive after he was born and a few years later his brother took him up in the barn and the coffin that was for doodle was up in there and his brother showed him.
  • Dynamic charcter
  • The color red is a piece of imagery in this story because it connects blood, the ibis, and Doodle his blood upon his death. When the scarlet ibis falls to the ground and dies, Daddy reads from the bird book that it is native to Florida and South America. Like Doodle, the ibis has trouble adapting to its environment. When the ibis dies, Aunt Nicey notes that dead birds are bad luck, "'specially red dead birds." The dead bird died because it was out of its element like Doodle. "He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red. He sat very awkwardly, with his head thrown far back, making his vermilion neck appear unusually long and slim. His little legs, bent sharply at the knees, had never before seemed so fragile, so thin. I began to weep, and the tear-blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar. "
  • Personal reaction
  • I think the theme is Love in pride because one Doodle's brother took pride in trying to help him get better and he did help him he taught him how to walk and run. Also I think it is love because instead of being mean the whole story he started being nice and spending time and bonding with Doodle.
  • The dynamic character in this story is the narrator too which is Doodle's brother he is the dynamic character because at the beginning of the story he is rude and does mean things to Doodle and then at the end of the story he starts to be nicer and taught Doodle how to walk.
  • At the end of the story I felt pretty upset because Doodle died and his brother did not help him. I think he is good and bad brother because he was mean to Doodle then he was nice but then when Doodle died his brother did not help him so I think his brother mostly a bad brother.
