Janeka's jurny to america
Hi, I'm Janeka, and I am here to tell you about my Grandmother's immigration from Germany years ago.
It all began in 1815...
The “German belt” was in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa. That's where my gran was moving. As well as hundreds of Germans through the 1850s to the 1880s. Some associations helped the immigrants, and there were also better jobs in America, so my gran had it pretty good, and that was one of the reasons she came to America.Germany lost many men-to-be-soldiers, and a lot of their poor population. But gran still didn't want to go back. America was a much better place.
After the Napoleonic war ended in 1815, most Germans divided farms as a tradition, but the government made it so that there was not enough land, and the farms were
becoming small and unsuccessful.
So of coarse my gram was moving, her farm was failing, she had no choice!
But there's another thing too!
So,my gran fled to Wisconsin!
The other reason she fled was because all of the German men, were being taken to serve in the army, after loosing men in the war. My gran's brother was taken.
I'm Janeka, and this was my grandma's story!
